In April 2010, Penn Medicine lost one of its most devoted alumni and friends. Together with his wife, Barrie, the late Henry A. Jordan, MD’62, GME’67, was a steadfast champion of Penn Medicine and our students. One of the most committed, generous, and active graduates of our School of Medicine, Henry will be greatly missed.
Henry once said, “One of my greatest joys has been meeting the bright students who have been supported by our family’s scholarship funds. I believe these talented graduates will become the stars of the health care system in America — and that bodes well for the health of this nation. I could not be more proud to be part of the Penn Medicine family.”
Henry and Barrie strove to advance all of Penn Medicine’s missions in education, patient care, and research. One of their greatest contributions to Penn Medicine was the creation of the Jordan Center for Gynecologic Cancer, housed in the Ruth and Raymond Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. Henry and Barrie are perhaps best known for their exceptional scholarship support and wonderful relationships with Penn Medicine students. They most recently launched the Jordan Family Challenge Fund in order to inspire others to give to scholarship support.
In addition to his career as a noted psychiatrist, Henry remained dedicated to his medical alma mater. Most recently he served as chair of the Campaign for Penn Medicine and co-chair of the University’s Making History campaign. He was an inaugural member of the Penn Medicine Board of Trustees, a member of the Executive Committee, and chair of the Development Committee. He served as class agent for the medical school Class of 1962 for many years and was a former president of the Medical Alumni Society.
The School’s first Medical Alumni Service Award was given to Henry. He also received the Alumni Award of Merit from the University.
Henry’s compassion, gentle smile, and generous sense of humor encouraged everyone around him, especially students who sought to emulate him in every way. His vision and generosity will be an inspiration for generations to come.
